Back to School 2013

Freaks and Geeks

It may be time to hit the books, but all we see is TV!!!

For this coming season we’re all about taking inspiration from 80’s and 90’s movies and shows like Freaks and Geeks and 90210.

Denim, button-ups, and 90s grunge florals are all up in our brain here at Revival.  Why ditch your denim cut-offs since summer’s almost over? Just pair them with some leggings and your boyfriend’s letterman jacket.  We’ve got the goods to keep you going steady all semester.  You’ll be homecoming queen in no time, baby.

Blogger Roundup Part Dos

As promised, here is the dude blogger roundup. There are some really great men out there with even better senses of style. I’m a sucker for menswear and try to incorporate some male pieces into my wardrobe every once in a while. So, for those ladies or dudes who adore pressed pants, sports jackets, and Monkstrap shoes, this post is for you.

One fantastic website where you can read tons of articles by hilarious men is Four-Pins.

Image

It’s basically a man’s online magazine. Their writing is honest, witty, and they always have fantastic pictures to look through.

Image

Dudes get style, gear, and culture tips on how to become a true, modern, stylish gentleman. What else could you want?

My all-time forever favorite male blogger is The Sartorialist

Image

He’s one of the most fantastic street style photographers I’ve ever seen besides Tommy Ton. But everyone knows Tommy Ton so I’m not even going to go over his role in the development of street style photography.

PS speaking of the development of street style photography, if you don’t know Bill Cunningham and his whole story you need to watch his documentary on Netflix now.

ImageI check Scott’s site multiple times a day. He often has great commentary. He loves vintage photos and sometimes finds a gem in an old book to post, which is always a treat. His use of shadow and lighting and capturing movement are so inspiring.

Image

Like I said, he has an eye for capturing perfect moments.

Image

He does collections of images like this under the title “If you’re thinking about…”, showing multiple ways to wear the same type of clothing. Super helpful when thinking about what to do with that $140 dress you couldn’t resist from Anthro.

Image

Just kidding. I definitely can’t afford a $140 dress at Anthro. That’s why I shop at Revival! 😉 Vintage, a multitude of pieces to choose from, and the clothing is just as beautiful as Anthropology…only affordable.

Anyways, onto one of the most attractive males on the planet and the personal menswear blogger:  Adam Gallagher.

Image

Is he fucking classy or what? Look at that messenger bag. Look at his jacket lining! LOOK AT THE POCKET SQUARE SUBTLY MATCHING HIS TIE. Even his sunglasses fit his color scheme.

Image

Fuck you, Adam. You’re too pretty.

Image

Can we talk about that smolder? Or that tie clip? Or just the fact that more men need to wear pinstripe blazers?

Or all three?

Forever?

Image

Some of these photos are from when he was still living in California. He’s up in New York being famous and attractive now. He’s doing cool things in cool places. You should bookmark him.

The coolest blogger on the west coast: Tommy Lei

Image

I’m beginning to think that every male named Tommy has a ridiculously cool sense of style and just the right amount of experimentalism in him to shake things up.

Image

His style is sleek, edgy, and experimental with a mixture of luxe pieces and laid-back LA finds as well. He reminds me a lot of Bryan Yambao, whom we have all come to know and love.

Image

I love how androgynous his looks are. I want to steal everything in his closet. If you like printed denim, men wearing short shorts, or anything designed by Phillip Lim, you will love Mybelonging.

And last but not least, my new favorite menswear blog: What Ali Wore.

Image

I want you to know how much I love old people. I fucking love old people. They’re so cute with their canes and long dresses and gentle voices and wrinkly smiles. Cute old dude that I want to adopt as my grandfather + fantastic clothing + posing as if he were in the middle of a dance move = happy Ash.

Image

I don’t think I’ve seen anyone pull off a printed short-sleeve button down like Ali.

Image

Hey guys, just doing some cherry pickin’.

Image

#swag

Seriously, though. Where do I apply to become his granddaughter?

Blogger Roundup

All evidence we have to date proves that the main medium for fashion chicks and dicks in this day and age is blogging. Every day I meet people that are hopping on the blogging train…but what about those people that have stuck it out from the beginning…or the almost-beginning? We can’t all be Tavi Gevinson, unfortunately.

Image

Ugh. It’s so hard not to be jealous of her. She’s so cute.

Lets start with the Queen of all Blogger Queens: Bri Emery.

Image

Creative genius. Half the creator of blogshop. An explosion of minimalism and color and beautiful images. She has fantastic content! Whether you’re into interior design, graphic design, or you just love pretty things, Designlovefest is for you.

Image

See? And look at all of the things she does for you. She posts recipes, multiple cute laptop and iPhone background downloads, style posts, and even maps/things to do in certain cities around the world on the reg.

Image

Hit her up. I visit her site multiple times a day. It’s a problem.

Next, there is everyone’s favorite UO badass: Jessie Barber

Image

She loves Woody Allen, tattoos (are you swooning yet?), vintage patches, thrifting, and iced coffee. I’m biased because, truly, I only enjoy cold coffee. She is the girl you want to take to the city to help you explore abandoned apartments, find hole-in-the-wall cafes, and sluggishly pull each other along the cobblestone streets in and out of thrift stores to find those great pieces you just know are going to rest behind someone’s grandmother’s $300 fur coat.

Image

Her content is on the same level as Bri’s. Original, stylish, effortless. Jess definitely stays true to who she is (the representation of who she is through the medium–we don’t really know who she is now, do we?). And can we talk about this nail art?

Image

Her instagram is also just as fantastic: @chaplinnn

Can we talk about how Karla Deras could put on a paper bag and still look effortless and cool? She’s that girl who looks cute and fabulous in anything she drapes on her body.

Image

She’s the girl that invites you to brunch and then changes your life by showing you the best places to buy vintage.

Image

She also has a jewelry line called LoveGold and creates inspirational monthly moodboards.

Image

Faces on faces on faces on gold.

NEXT: I was very intimidated when I first stumbled upon I Hate Blonde. Ms. Lynch is that badass chick that #werks the sidewalk runway of New York donning little-to-any articles of clothing with Empire-State-Building-High heeled boots.

Image

I found her when I was around fifteen (in the midst of attending an all girl’s Catholic high school) and thought the words I was reading were sin.

Image

But her writing is vague and mysterious and poetic and makes me want to sell everything I own and move to Brooklyn and buy a polaroid camera and have drunken adventures with skater boys.

Image

Is it really that irrational?

Then there comes my new favorite: Do The Hotpants.

Image

This chick is just a clusterfuck of ridiculous. And I love it. Readers eat it up. She’s fearless, creative, and definitely someone you would want to invite with you to go out on a smoldering New Orleans Saturday night.

Image

She’s hysterical and wears rope for belts. What else do you want in a blogger?

Have you been a follower of these kick-ass ladies? What are some of your favorite blogs? Keep watch, we have a men’s blogger list coming up soon.

Tyler Kinchen & The Right Pieces

photo 1

Have you heard of these guys? Because you need to. I was wandering around Frenchman a couple weeks ago looking for a cool place to listen to some music with some friends and happened to end up at Vaso right as these guys were setting up. Being a musician, I can be very judgmental when it comes to local music–especially when they incorporate any type of funk or jazz into their tunes–so when they took out the brass I was instantly interested. I parked myself right in front and put on my bitch face ready to either be blown away or judge the shit out of them. (Side note: Dear local musicians, I am so proud of what you do. You have to put up with judgmental people like me all the time and more often than not you end up seriously impressing me. Plus, it takes a lot to get up there and do what you do. A++ to you.)

Warning: I will dance to anything that has a good beat.

And do these guys have rhythm.

They started their set with a cover of Express Yourself and my feet would not stop moving. Tyler has such fantastic stage presence and all of the guys (besides being attractive, ladies) have personalities that shine throughout their shows. They play a wide range of material and sneak in originals songs here and there. Honestly, until they told you their song was an original you would just think that it was a really great song that you can’t believe you’ve never heard of and want to dance to for the rest of your life.

Seriously, though. I came into Vaso in a vintage blouse with buttons down the back and by the time I left the shirt was soaked with sweat and the only button still attached to the shirt was the top one. If you like to dance, these are your boys.

If I could put TK and The Right Pieces into one word it would be FUN.

You can feel the chemistry off of the stage. By the third song, the dance floor was packed, and there was no room to stand in the back. The vibes are great. They have a fantastic sense of musicianship and obviously put in a lot of practice time. They uses unexpected breaks like nobody’s business and really know how to make a rhythm & blues/funk song sound catchy and–in a way–pop-y.

Also, for most of their originals, the guys on trumpet, trombone, and sax usually have choreographed dance moves. If that isn’t a reason in itself to check these guys out, you need to reevaluate your priorities in life.

They play every Thursday at Hard Rock. Get your ass to Bourbon and check them out!
